This Oregon Scientific PE319 pedometer's built-in panic alarm means that you can feel safe at all times. It transmits a 120dB emergency signal - that's loud. The LCD display shows steps taken, distance travelled, clock time or timer and 12/24 hour clock display. It also includes a calorie counter. The Hi-Glo backlight makes night viewing easy. The count up timer runs to 99h, 59 min and 59 secs. Simply clip it to your belt or waistband. Batteries included.
Pedometers: The '10,000 steps' phenomenon, originally invented in Japan nearly 40 years ago, is based on a person walking 10,000 steps per day to achieve and develop their fitness levels. The average US couch potato takes about 2300 and 3000 steps daily according to a study by American company Novartis Nutrition. In the UK, the National Audit Office reported in 2001 that 'obesity had tripled over the last 20 years and continues rise. Most adults in England are now overweight, and one in five is obese'. If this trend continues, by 2010 obesity related diseases, such as coronary heart disease, will be costing the economy over £3.5 billion a year. Pedometers, how can they help? Use a pedometer to measure 10,000 steps a day. 10,000 steps a day could be the key to reducing the obesity figure - by briskly walking the equivalent of 4-5 miles, intensity and time targets are being met. But how do you motivate yourself and how do you keep track of 10,000 steps?

WITH AN OREGON SCIENTIFIC PEDOMETER. Pedometers are simple to use. Ways to reach your 10,000 target: Walking 10,000 steps a day can be a daunting task - so here are some tips on how to reach that illusive figure - § Take the stairs instead of the lift § Park a little further away from your destination and walk an extra five minutes § Walk during your lunch break § Walk to the local shops for the forgotten bits and pieces § Walk to your friend's house instead of driving § When watching TV - take a walk in the ad break § Don't call your office colleagues - walk to their desk and talk face-to-face Don't forget to wear your pedometer at all times! You're probably walking more than you think - every step counts! Pedometers measure the distance you walk.

Dimensions: 60mm x 54mm x 31mm Movement sensitive step counter with sensitivity adjustment Panic Alarm (120 decibel) Calorie counter Count up timer Total distance travelled (miles) Step counter for use in the 10,000 steps programme User set stride length for accurate readings Clock Built in belt clip HiGlo backlight Measures in miles only With regard to distance travelled, Pedometers are not 100% accurate. They rely on the user setting an accurate stride length in to the pedometer. Each time the user takes a step, it is assumed they have travelled that far, i.e. 3 feet. If you change stride pattern, there will be an increased error.
